The Laboratory of Microbiology and Biochemistry of freshwater and marine aquatic environments within the Institute of Microbiology, USSR Academy of Sciences was established by Academician M.V. Ivanov in 1984. Its activity concentrates in assessment of the rates of microbial processes in the water column and bottom sediments in freshwater and marine environments, with a special focus at the rates of microbial processes of the carbon and sulfur cycles and determination of the geochemical effects of microbial activity.
Extensive research was carried out in the Black Sea (deep-water and coastal sites), Caspian Sea (deep trenches), and Baltic Sea (methane mud volcanoes and cold seeps). Considerable amounts of work dealt with research in the Arctic seas. The data on microbial abundance and the rates of microbial processes in the Barents, White, Kara, and Chukchi seas were obtained and published.
Priority results were obtained on assessment of the role of microorganisms in the transformation of organic matter arriving with the river inflow. Microbial communities developing on the underwater methane seeps are an important subject of investigation. Microbial activity in the water column of inland meromictic lakes is under study.
Quantitative assessment of the rates of oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis, methanogenesis and methane oxidation, and sulfate reduction was carried out for the lakes of different origin and with different mineralization levels. In the laboratory, the work on microbial biogeochemistry is closely associated with investigation of ecology and structure of aquatic microbial communities.
The laboratory works in close co-operation with P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences.
