Scientific departments at the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS host, on a regular basis, various academic, including international, activities such as competitions, lectures, seminars, conferences, symposia and so on, most of which are aimed at improving the educational level of young scientists, encouraging their scientific activities, as well as discussing crucial issues and challenges of modern biotechnology.
Since 1944 the A.N.Bach Institute of Biochemistry RAS holds an annual lecture on topical issues in biochemistry on March 17 – the birthday of Academician Aleksei N. Bach. The Aleksei Bach award was established in 1946 and is given every three years by the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences for outstanding scientific achievement, scientific discoveries and inventions in the field of biochemistry.
V.L. Kretovich Scholarships are awarded annually to the best graduate students majoring in biochemistry and biotechnology at the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS. The scholarship is given to graduate students, who have attained the most outstanding record in course work after the second year of graduate studies.
Since 2009 the S.N. Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology RAS holds lectures in honor and memory of the prominent Russian microbiologist S.N. Winogradsky. The S.N. Winogradsky award is given by the Russian Academy of Sciences for outstanding scientific achievement in the field of general microbiology.
Since 2004 the S.N.Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology RAS traditionally holds a school-conference for young scientists with international participation “Actual Aspects of Modern Microbiology”. The main objective of the international school-conference is to exchange ideas, discuss the pressing issues and problems of modern microbiology, microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, and biotechnology. The event includes thematic lectures by leading experts in microbiology as well as oral and poster presentations of young scientists (up to 35 years old) from the leading scientific institutions and universities of Russia and CIS countries on subjects stated in the conference program.
The Institute of Bioengineering together with the Russian Chitin Society annually holds Shorygin chitin lectures with prizes awarded to young chitinologists (up to 28 years).
In the framework of the research and educational project “Talens for Bioengineering“, the Institute of Bioengineering holds annual school workshops for students. Within the past 10 years over 400 students from 30 regional universities took part in the workshops.
The Research Center of Biotechnology RAS is one of the organizers of the All-Russian Youth Forum “Step into the Future”. It participates in the expert panel, is responsible for the section “System biology and biotechnology”, collaborates in organizing Moscow Olympiads for school pupils, deliver lectures on topical issues of biotechnology and molecular biology, holds workshops (consulting) in various research areas.
